"This is what a breakup sounds like" a mixtape by Lauren Moon
May 28, 2015
My boyfriend broke up with me four months ago. So for May's theme of "escape," what better way to pay homage to the post-breakup experience than through sharing the songs that have made and defined it as a way of escaping that same experience? Read on for the music that has carried the team.
(full mixtape at bottom of page)
TRACK 1: Madonna - "Borderline" (Happiness level 60%)
Things aren’t looking good. Your boyfriend won’t stop emailing that girl that’s in love with him. It’s now been 7 months of you telling him it’s a “bad idea” for his sake, her sake, and your sake, but it’s falling on deaf ears. You turn to Madonna for wisdom, who knows so much about so many things, especially what you're going through.
TRACK 2: The Pastels - "Over My Shoulder" and Nina Simone - "I Want a Little Sugar In My Bowl" (Happiness level 20%)
You finally do it. You breakup with your boyfriend. It’s so shitty. He didn’t even fight for the relationship. But it’s better this way!
TRACK 3: Knicks - "Quarterbacks" and Billie Holiday - "The Man I Love" (Happiness level 15%)
He realizes he was wrong. He realizes he’s made a mistake. He wants you back. But do you want to be back with him? He tells you he’s still been emailing that girl. No, it’s over.
TRACK 4: The Shirelles - "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" (Happiness level 30%)
He drives down to visit you. He asks if you’ve thought more about getting back together. You have, but you know it’s a bad idea. You know what’s happened when he’s made you promises before.
TRACK 5: The Breeders - "Do You Love Me Now?" (Happiness level 60%)
It’s been over a month now and he is relentless. He is so sorry. He has learned so much! He loves you. He loves everything about you. He is “100% ready to commit” to you and no one else. You’re scared, but you decide to believe him.
TRACK 6: Roy Orbison - "In Dreams" (Happiness level 2%)
Two days later he tells you that he can’t date you. He isn’t ready to commit to you. He’s sorry. Again. Okay.
TRACK 7: (Happiness level ?)
That night you sit on your balcony not knowing what to feel.
TRACK 8: Joe Hisaishi- "One Summer's Day" (Happiness level ?)
The next day, you stay in all day and watch Hayao Miyazaki’s cinematic masterpiece, Spirited Away.
The next day, you stay in all day and watch Hayao Miyazaki’s cinematic masterpiece, Howl’s Moving Castle. You feel noticeably better. Finally notice the five Dominos boxes next to your bed. That’s why your room smelled like pizza.
TRACK 11: Palm2 ft. Wiley - "Yellow" and Troyboi - "FYI" (Happiness level 80??)
For some inexplicable reason, the only music you can listen to for prolonged periods and that gives you any sort of comfort is aggressive trap-influenced internet music, very loudly. Music made my machines. You are a machine. A panini-eating MACHINE!
Wait, have you really been driving around your neighborhood for an hour listening to “Gold Soundz” on repeat?
TRACK 14: Billy Joel - "Just the Way You Are" (Happiness level ?)
Wait, did you really drive all the way to Santa Monica to “look at the ocean” so you could “feel something”?
TRACK 15: J. Cole - "Wet Dreamz" (Happiness level 10%)
Wait, are you crying to J. Cole’s “Wet Dreamz” right now? About the beauty of young love and all the promise and discoveries that lie ahead? About the innocence of young J. Cole?
TRACK 16: The Deele - "Two Occasions" (Happiness level 20%)
You hear this song on KRTH 101.1 FM while in the car with a friend. It makes you cry and moves you in ways unimaginable. You are surprised, because this song is objectively not very good, and thereby you don't let your friend see your tears. But though questionable, you are positive that it is the most beautiful song that you’ve ever heard.
TRACK 17: James Taylor - "Your Smiling Face" and Andy Gibb - "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" (Happiness level 40%)
You can’t stop listening to white-boy soft rock love songs. But maybe this is better than the resounding blast of internet music? Two extremes. Too extreme? What kind of phase is this?? What's happening???
TRACK 18: Kanye West - "Slow Jamz" and Mario - "Let Me Love You" and Drake - "Come Thru" (Happiness level 55%)
Thankfully the soft rock has been overtaken by the lyrically reassuring and sexually charged musings of Mario, Kanye, and Drake. There are MEN out there who will like, take CARE of you so no more fuckboys in your life! No, you need a MAN who knows what he WANTS and what he wants is YOU and he'll communicate it thru song~~~
LOL you were so blind, you don’t need a MAN. Fuck men! Your sensuality is currency, is power, and no man can fuck with that. You don’t need to be taken care of~ you turn to tragically overlooked female R&B from 2002 as the source of your new power.
Okay, but you can still be totally independent and the number one agent in your life and find a partner who totally respects that and looks up to you for that, like Ne-Yo. You had no fondness for this song when you heard it in high school but then again, you were a literal child who had no idea about anything because this song is a colossal achievement in songwriting and also NE-YO.
You’re driving to see your friend and realize that it’s almost been four months since the breakup. And you feel…okay. There are days where you don’t even think about your ex, and some bad days where you do, but overall, you’ve been… happy lately. You’ve been talking to that cute boy from college. You got a job. You found a new place to live, so hey, things are going to be okay. You turn on the Roy boy and put him on repeat because you deserve it, bb.
**here's a link (without the internet songs, sadly only found on the internet) for the full "experience"?!
